POP- ARTS

People started follow the arts since 14 b.C. century, as we can see through the archaeological findings.

The pottery developed first, thanks to the supply of clay that the area had and then the copper works.

Lesvos became a ceramic center, since the work shops on the island were too many, especially in Mandamados and Agiasos.

There, were made many decorative items with patterns coming from the Byzantine tradition and nature. These areas still preserve this art till today, while many samples of the ceramic art are exposed in Pop Art museums and Laographic Collections of the island.

Wood curving had also developed since there was supply of wood (olive trees and chestnut).

At first, ecclesiastic items were made, like stools, temples e.t.c. Years later furniture and decorative items made for the Lesbian houses (doors, stairs, roofs).

Famous are the wooden chests that adorn the rooms. The motives come from the Byzantine tradition and the Lesbian nature.

Today the visitor can admire them in Laographic and Ecclesiastic museums of the island and has the ability to visit work shops and their exhibitions.

Weaving blossoms, and colored fabrics are made with the traditional loom, while the fibers were dyed with phytogenic colors. Weaving is a female work and the motives were coming from natural landscapes and were separated in those for ordinary or special use (celebrations e.t.c.). The visitor can see samples in Laographic museums and buy unique pieces in stores and Women Cooperation's in the villages.
