FLORA

 In Lemnos island flora is mainly bushes and flowers. Below we will introduce you some characteristic samples of Lemnos flora.

Poppy belongs to the family of Papaverides. The red color that the flower has is very imposing. Here in Lemnos there are many poppies in spring. A basic characteristic of Poppy is the lactic juice that all the offsets have.

The vine is cultivated in Lemnos for many years. The vine is known as arbor also. The vine is cultivated for the crops  while the leaves are used for cooking. Lemnos wines are famous all over Greece.

The lily of the sea can be found in many places by the sea, close to coasts. The scent is wonderful. Travels you to wonderful places. Almond trees show a different meaning to everybody heart. The view of blooming trees is magnificent. Almond tree is a typical Mediterranean tree.

Oregano can be found on the rocks. In August we collect and store it in glass vase. We use all the plant and its essential oil also. Daises are growing in spring, most times in fields. Their colors white and yellow, combining with their great number give a pleasant picture to every visitor.

Olive trees have showed in Mediterranean many many thousands years ago. The meaning of olive trees during history is very important. The tree give olives and offer shelter to many birds. Unfortunately in Lemnos there are not many trees like Lesvos island has.

There are many kinds of pine trees with different size and pine needles.

In Lemnos you can see the common kind of pine tree. One of the most beautiful kinds is the Japanese Bonsai.

The fig is one of the most ancient trees that humans have cultivated. The big and wide leaves are recognizable from everybody. The figs are very nutritious and are eaten either fresh or dried.

Pomegranate is a deciduous tree that in spring is flourishing and attracts everybody. The fruits of pomegranate are very sweet and red.

FAUNA

 There are some kinds of birds, mammals and reptiles all over the island.

Falcon Neumann: For many centuries Falcon Neumann, were nesting in Greek villages and were a really good icon. Nowadays Falcon Neumann is an endangered specie thanks to fertilizers, illegal hunting and biotope destruction in Africa and Europe. Falcon Neumann, are coming from Africa at the end of March. At the end of April the female breeds 3-4 eggs that become 3-4 birds.

Quite known in Lemnos island is the mountain grouse. This kind of grouse leaves in flocks most of the time. In spring the grouses are joined in pairs so as to sit their eggs. Today their number is reduced more and more.

Swallows immigrate to our country so as to find a wormer place. Make from 1 to 4 eggs and sit them after. Some swallows make their eggs at the same place that breed last year. 

Swans are coming to Lemnos during summer so as to find food. Later travel to southern area (e.g. Africa). Their nutrition includes cereal, corn and other nuts.


Reptiles
Viper: This reptile is 65 to 90 cm length. Is the only snake in Eastern Europe that has an extrusion on its muzzle. Males have grey color while females are brown.
Samiamidi: Slowworm is a small lizard that nests to tiles of our houses. Eat flies, mosquitos and other insects.

Turtle: Reptile with protective shell without teeth and fleshy tongue. Eat only plants and small invertebrate animals. There are sea and terrestrial turtles.


Mammals
Hogs are also breed in Lemnos. Many individual breed hogs for their families and relatives. Hogs are a growing investment for Lemnos island.

Calves exist in great number all over the island. All the butchers breed animals and shell them to their stores. Cows are breed to make small calves and give milk. Their milk can be from 15 to 25 kilos from a strong cow.

Lamps are sold a lot in Lemnos. All the cattle-breeders sell the lamps to cattle-dealers and they keep the lamps in their stores or export them to other areas of our country.

The sheep give milk and wool. The milk is used for making cheese and other.
